“Since I believe fairy stories are meant to enliven a child’s own imagination, I like to intrude as little as possible upon this wondrous process. The shadowy forms of silhouettes lead the reader from page to page until a momentary bright light is cast upon a particular turn of the story in the colorplate appearing at the opening and closing of each tale. In essence, I allow the reader to peer through the chinks in the wall of mystery which surrounds the fairy tale world. But I strive to leave that mytery intact.”

This first hardcover edition has been superseded by a softcover edition whose stories and silhouette illustrations are identical. The six colorplates from oil vignettes have been eliminated from the second edition in order to make it more affordable. However, a set of 6 lithographs from these paintings may still be purchased from Three Arts Press for $10.00.
